Experience

Alejandro Martínez serves as Chief Legal Officer (CLO) and Head of the International Trade practice, with more than 25 years of experience advising domestic and international companies on customs and foreign trade compliance in Mexico. His practice combines a strategic and operational approach, enabling him to design comprehensive solutions that mitigate customs and foreign trade risks and optimize supply chains in highly regulated environments.

Throughout his career, he has advised companies on international trade, customs law, regulatory compliance, customs valuation, and non-tariff regulations and restrictions. He also has a strong track record in administrative and customs litigation, having secured favorable rulings in highly technical and economically significant matters. As CLO, he oversees the coordination of legal teams, development of practice areas, and management of strategic projects and staffing, while serving as a member of the Firm’s Executive Committee. Prior to this role, he was a partner at Baker McKenzie, where he successfully positioned the international trade practice in leading global rankings.

He holds law and LLM degrees and was recognized as a “Next Generation Lawyer” by Legal 500 in 2017 and 2019, highlighting his leadership and expertise in the field. He is a common speaker in specialized forums and publishes articles in national and international foreign trade journals.

  • Represented a Mexican company, leader in the textile industry, before the Federal Courts in litigation procedures derived from tariff classification matters and administrative customs procedures.
  • Implemented strategies and programs to increase the level of trade and customs compliance for export manufacturing companies.
  • Alejandro is the leading lawyer in Mexico in terms of the analysis and development of legislation related to autonomous vehicles; as well as in the execution of autonomous vehicles test projects in Mexico.
  • Designed and executed a successful litigation procedure in favor of a company, part of a large international manufacturing group, representing approximately 500 million pesos.
  • Designed a risk analysis strategy implemented by diverse retail companies to evaluate the level of compliance in customs and foreign trade operations.
