“COVID-19 Permit version 4.0” digital tool developed by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS)

On July 6 th , 2022, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS, by its acronym in Spanish) has made available to all affiliated employees a digital tool called “COVID-19 Permit version 4.0”, in which affiliated employees can request a temporary incapacity, without the need to attend a general doctor, with the purpose of breaking the chain of infection.

This digital tool is available through a QR code, which will be available to all affiliated employees through various digital platforms or physically, at the Institute’s numerous medical units. Once the employees have access to the aforementioned QR code, they must enter their information to receive a confirmation of their leave permit via mail, which they must notify to their company immediately. It works just like any other temporary incapacity.

The employee will be legally granted a sick leave permit of 5 days and an allowance and/or subsidy - as in the case of general illness- of 60 percent of the salary registered before the IMSS during the fourth and fifth days of incapacity; the payment will be made to the registered account and once the application is processed, it cannot be cancelled. If an employee has already been granted with a previous COVID leave permit, the employee may apply for another one, taking into consideration that the recovery period granted in the first permit was for 14 days, the second permit for 7 days and this electronic and expedited permit will be granted for a 5 days of recovery period.

It is important to mention that all incapacities related to a “work-related risk and/or illness” will be taken into consideration by the IMSS to determine the company's risk premium. In the event your company has received any rectification to the risk premium, we will be glad to advise and evaluate if such rectification has been issued in accordance with the applicable legislation.
