Europe Protects "Tequila".

On March 20th, 2019, the acknowledgement of the traditional Mexican beverage called “Tequila” as a Geographic Indication in the European Community will come into force, incorporating such product to a list of more than 30 Geographical Indications protected by the European Union; this as a result of the efforts conducted by the Tequila Regulatory Board (“Consejo Regulador del Tequila”), as well as the Mexican Government.

This means that the beverage known as Tequila will be acknowledged and protected in the aforementioned territory, under the figure of the Geographical Indication, which corresponds to the name of a specific geographic region that identifies a product as native of the same, when certain characteristics as its quality or reputation can be attributed to its geographic origin.

Said acknowledgement becomes relevant if we take into consideration that Europe constitutes the second largest market for Tequila, exporting more than 18 million liters throughout 2018.

The popularity of such beverage has also brought to commerce counterfeit product in places such as Germany and Portugal, however, the protection granted will provide authorities the faculties to initiate legal actions against those who conduct activities that could harm the reputation of Tequila.
